A single reed is some kind of a thin cane blade. The opening in the mouthpiece of the woodwind instrument is closed by it so that only the small orifice is left. Resonance of the reed helps to close and open the channel in the mouthpiece of the instrument. A double reed is composed of two cane laminas compactly united with each other.
